Passage 4
About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table, and I couldn't help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy—who could not have been more than seven or eight years old replied, “Frankly, I've been feeling a little depressed lately.”
This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn't find out we were “depressed”, that is, in low spirits, until we were in high school.
Undoubtedly a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don't seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.
Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?
Human development depends not only on born biological states, but also on patterns of gaining social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new social positions. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages; traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation machine has been equipped in 99 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed text to the less challenging, more attractive moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information which children will gain. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.
41
According to the author, feeling depressed is ________ .
  • A.a sure sign of a mental problem in a child
  • B.a mental state present in all humans, including children
  • C.something that cannot be avoided in children's mental development
  • D.something hardly expected in a young child
42
Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world ________ .
  • A.through contact with society
  • B.gradually and under guidance
  • C.naturally and by biological instinct
  • D.through exposure to social information
43
According to the author, that today's children seem adult-like results from ________ .
  • A.the widespread influence of television
  • B.the poor arrangement of teaching content
  • C.the fast pace of human intellectual development
  • D.the constantly rising standard of living
44
What can we know about communication through print for children?
  • A.It enables children to gain more social information.
  • B.It develops children's interest in reading and writing.
  • C.It helps children to memorize and practise information more.
  • D.It can control what children are to learn.
45
What does the author think of the change in today's children?
  • A.He feels their adult-like behaviour is so funny.
  • B.He thinks the change worthy of notice.
  • C.He considers it a rapid development.
  • D.He seems to be upset about it.
Passage Four
How many times have you got upset because someone wasn't doing his job, because your child wasn't behaving? How many times have you been irritated when you've planned something carefully and things didn't go as you'd hoped?
This kind of anger and irritation happens to all of us—it's part of the human experiences. One thing that irritates me is when people talk during a movie, or cut me off in traffic. Actually, I have a lot of these little annoyances—don't we all? And it isn't always easy to find peace when you've become upset or irritated.
Let me tell you a little secret to finding peace of mind:see the glass as already broken. See, the cause of our stress, anger and irritation is that things don't go the way we like, the way we expect them to. Think of how many times this has been true for you. And so the solution is simple: expect things to go wrong, expect things to be different from what we hoped or planned, expect the unexpected to happen. And accept it.
One quick example: on our recent trip to Japan, I told my kids to expect things to go wrong—they always do on a trip. I told them, “See it as part of the adventure.”
And this worked like a charm. When we inevitably took the wrong train on a foreign language subway system, or when it rained on the day we went to Disney Sea, or when we took three trains and walked 10 blocks only to find the National Children's Castle closed on Mondays…they said, “It's part of the adventure!” And it was all OK—we didn't get too bothered.
So when the nice glass you bought inevitably falls and breaks some day, you might get upset. But things will be different, if you see the glass as already broken, from the day you get it. You know it'll break some day, so from the beginning, see it as already broken. Be a time traveler, or someone with time traveling vision, and see the future of this glass, from this moment until it inevitably breaks. And when it breaks, you won't be upset or sad—because it was already broken, from the day you got it. And you'll realize that every moment you have with it is precious.

Passage One
Researchers have found that REM(rapid eye movement) sleep is important to human beings. This type of sleep generally occurs four or five times during one night of sleep, lasting five minutes to forty minutes for each occurrence. The deeper a person's sleep becomes, the longer the periods of rapid eye movement.
There are physical changes in the body to show that a person has changed from NREM(non-rapid eye movement) to REM sleep. Breathing becomes faster, the heart rate increases, and, as the name implies, the eyes begin to move quickly.
Accompanying these physical changes in the body is a very important characteristic of REM sleep. It is during REM sleep that a person dreams.

In the same way that a child must be able to move his arms and legs before he can learn to walk, the child must physiologically be capable of producing and experiencing particular emotions before these emotions can be modified through learning. Psychologists have found that there are two basic processes by which learning takes place. One kind of learning is called “classical conditioning”. This occurs when one event or stimulus is consistently paired with or followed by, a reward or punishment. It is through classical conditioning that a child learns to associates his mothers’ face and voice with happiness and love, for he learns that this person provides food and comfort. Negative emotions are learned in a similar fashion.
The second kind of learning is called “operant conditioning”. This occurs when an individual learns to do things that produce rewards in his environment and learns not to do things that produce punishments. For example, if a mother always attends to her baby when he cries and cuddles him until he is quiet, she may teach him that if he cries he will get attention from mother. Thus, the baby will learn to increase his in order to have his mother more.
Every day, we grow and have new experiences. We constantly learn by reading, watching television interacting with other people, and so forth. This learning affects our emotions. Why is it that we learn to like some people and dislike others? If a person is nice to us, cares about us, we learn to associate this person with positive feelings, such as joy, happiness, and friendliness. On the other hand, if a person is mean to us, does not care about us, and even deliberately does things to harm us, we learn to associate this person with negative feelings, such as unhappiness, discomfort, and anger.
56
The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to ______.
  • A.teach children how to learn to produce and experience certain emotions

  • D.some other sorts of conditioning
58
