三、Part Ⅳ RC

30 marks(Reading Comprehension)

Read the following passages. Each passage is followed by several questions. Respond to the questions according to the passage. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet.
Section A(5 marks)
Directions:There is one passage in this section with 5 statements. Go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on the Answer Sheet.
For questions 56-60, mark
Y (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;
N (for NO ) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage;
NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage.
Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.
In 1945 leaders from 51 countries met in San Francisco, California, and organized the United Nations (often called the UN). World War II had just ended. Millions of people had died, and there was destruction everywhere. People hoped they could build a future of world peace through this new organization.
The United Nations has four main goals and purposes:
1.To work together for international peace and to solve international problems;
2.To develop friendly relations among nations;
3.To work together for human rights for everyone of all races, religions, languages, and of both sexes;
4.To build a center where nations can work together for these goals.
Today almost every country in the world is a member of the UN. Each country has signed an agreement that says:
1.All members are equal.
2.All members promise to solve international problems in a peaceful way.
3.No member will use force against another member.
4.All members will help the UN in its actions.
5.The UN will not try to solve problems within countries except to enforce international peace.
Obviously, the United Nations has not been completely successful in its goals. There have been several wars since 1945. However, the organization has helped bring peace to some countries that were at war. It has helped people who left their countries because of wars. It has helped bring independence to colonies.
The main United Nations organization is in New York City, but the UN has a “family” of other related organizations all over the world. These organizations try to provide a better life for everyone. One example is UNICEF, an organization that provides food, medical care, and many other services for poor children wherever they live. Another example is the World Health Organization, which develops medical programs all over the world.
There are thousands of UN workers in developing countries. They work as planners to increase production in farming and industry. They provide medical services, improve education programs, and spread scientific information. They develop programs that provide jobs and better living conditions. They help countries control their population growth.
The United Nations also holds large international conferences, where people meet to discuss important world issues. One conference was about the uses and ownership of oceans. Another was about women. There are also International Years. In these special years, people work together to improve situations and solve problems. One year was the International Year of the Child.
For centuries countries have fought each other, and powerful countries have taken control of weaker ones. It is very difficult to persuade nations to live together in peace. Nevertheless, the United Nations is attempting to do this. It is the only organization that unites the world in the search for peace.

Directions: Look at the topic headings below, marked A, B, C, D E, and F, and match them with the paragraphs in the text below. There is one extra heading which you don’t need to use.
Questions 61-65 are based on the following passage.
A.Gaining attention
B.Making sense of information
C.Trade secrets
D.Academic approval
E.A change of focus
F.An ancient skill
61.______
The Greek philosophers knew about it and it could still dramatically improve children’s school results today, except that no one teaches it. It is a very old technique for making your memory better. Try memorizing this series of random numbers: 3, 6, 5, 5, 2, 1, 2, 4. About as meaningful as dates in history, aren’t they? It is likely that you won’t remember them in five minutes, let alone in five hours. However, had you been at a lecture given at a school in the south of England last month, you would now be able to fix them in your head for five days, five weeks, in fact for ever.
62.______
“I am going to give you five techniques that will enable you to remember anything you need to know at school,” promised lecturer Ian Robinson to a hundred schoolchildren. “When I’ve finished in two hours’ time, your work will be far more effective and productive. Anyone not interested, leave now.” The entire room sat still, glued to their seats.
63.______
Robinson specializes in doing magic tricks that look totally impossible, and then he shows that they involve nothing more mysterious than good old-fashioned trickery. “I have always been interested in tricks involving memory,” he explains.
64.______
What Robinson’s schoolchildren get are methods that will be familiar to anyone who has dipped into any one of a dozen books on memory. The difference is that Robinson’s approach is aimed at schoolchildren. The basic idea is to take material that is random and meaningless and give them a structure. That series of numbers at the beginning of the article fits in here. Once you think of it as the number of days in the year—365—and the number of weeks—52—and so on, it suddenly becomes permanently memorable.
65.______
The reaction of schools has been uniformly enthusiastic. “The pupils benefited a lot from Ian’s talk,” says Dr Johnston, head of the school where Robinson was speaking. “Ideally we should run a regular class in memory techniques so pupils can pick it up gradually.”

Section C (10 marks)
  Directions:In this section, there is one passage followed by 5 questions. Read the passage carefully, then answer the questions in a maximum of 10 words. Remember to write the answers on the Answer Sheet.
  Questions 66 - 70 are based on the following passage.
  It was seen as the mark of civilized eating, and distinguished well-fed French workers from the English, who wolf down prawn sandwiches at their desks. However, France’s tradition of the three-course restaurant lunch is in danger of being killed off by the economic crisis. Around 3,000 traditional French restaurants, cafes and bars went bust in the first three months of 2008 and unions predict a further rush of closures as people worry about making ends meet. The number of French restaurants going bankrupt rose by 25% from last year, and cafes forced to close were up by 56%.题目图片Le Figaro’s renowned restaurant critic, Francois Simon, said that French consumers’ frugality had changed national eating habits and forced restaurant owners to the brink. Diners were now skipping the traditional aperitif, avoiding starters, drinking tap water, passing on wine and coffee and sharing puddings.
  Even the city’s smartest restaurants are getting impatient with smaller orders. In one restaurant near Paris’ Gare de Lyon, he reported, two couples were asked to leave by a desperate restaurant owner because they would not order starters. The restaurant chain Hippopotamus is now running loyalty deals and special-offer hamburgers, which have become more popular than French steak dishes. Office workers are increasingly buying take-away baguettes and supermarket lunches.
  Making ends meet with low salaries and rising food prices has become a national obsession as France’s economy continues to be sluggish. Regular TV reports describe the desperation of people forced to eat cheap tinned vegetables or forage in bins at markets. The restaurant sector has seen the third highest number of bankruptcies in France this year, after the construction and building trades, according to the credit insurance group Euler Hermes SFAC.
  The time French people spend on eating meals in restaurants has already gone down:in 1975, a lunch out took an average of one and a half hours. By 2005, this had fallen to 32 minutes. Daniele Deleval, vice president of the UMIH restaurant and hotel union, said, “We’re very worried. Since the start of the year, the number of restaurant customers has dropped, on average, 20%, and we’re seeing no signs of improvement.”
Jean Guillaume, owner of Le Bouquet brasserie on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris’ smart 8thdistrict, said, “Lunch customers used to order a main course, dessert, coffee and a bottle of wine. Now they’re limiting themselves to a main course, tap water, and giving up the rest. Of 75 customers in this lunchtime, none had a bottle of wine. It’s the end of a tradition of lunching out and it looks like figures will stay this low for two to three years.” The nearby bakery, however, was busy selling take-away baguettes, with queues down the street at midday.题目图片 RRestaurant and bar owners are reeling from a poor summer with fewer international tourists visiting Paris, especially Americans and Japanese. And in Toulouse, cafe owners complained that customers would try to make one drink last as long as possible. Even in French holiday destinations, like Arcachon in the west or the cote d’Azur in the south, restaurant owners said business was down by at least 10%.
Questions:
36
What is causing the number of people dining in restaurants to decrease?
37
Which expression in paragraph 1 means having just enough money to buy the things you need?
38
Why were two couples ordered to leave a restaurant near the Gare de Lyon?
39
Which two sectors saw more bankruptcies than the restaurant sector in 2008 ?
40
why is the summer described as “poor”(line 1, last paragraph)?
Section D(10 marks)
Directions:In this section, there is one passage followed by a summary. Read the passage carefully and complete the summary below by choosing no more than three words from the passage. Remember to write the answers on the Answer Sheet.
Questions 71-75 are based on the following passage.
Biogas: a Solution to Many Problems
In almost all developing countries, the lack of adequate supplies of cheap, convenient and reliable fuel is a major problem. Rural communities depend largely on kerosene, wood and dung for their cooking and lighting needs. But kerosene is now priced out of reach of many people and wood, except in heavily forested areas, is in short supply. The search for firewood occupies a large part of the working day and has resulted in widespread deforestation.
Dung is in constant supply wherever there are farm animals and, when dried, it is convenient to store and use. But burning dung destroys its value as fertilizer, thus depriving the soil of a much needed source of humus and nitrogen.
Rural areas of developing countries are also plagued by a lack of adequate sanitation. Improper waste disposal spreads disease, contaminates water sources and provides breeding grounds for disease-carrying insect.
The problems of improving environmental hygiene, conserving resources and finding alternative sources of fuel may be unrelated. Their solutions, however, are not, as many countries experimenting with biogas technology are discovering. Biogas, a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide, is produced by the fermentation of organic matter. The process of anaerobic fermentation is a natural one occurring whenever living matter decomposes. By containing the matter—and the process—in a digester or biogas plant, the combustible gas can be trapped and used as fuel for household lighting and cooking. The digested slurry that remains can be used on the land as a soil conditioner and fertilizer.
Biogas plants have attracted much interest in recent years and they are in use in several Asian countries: 36,000 are reported in rural areas of India, 27,000 in Korea and more than 80,000 in China. In most countries the value of the gas has been the prime factor leading to their adoption: 70 per cent of India's plants, for instance, were built during the energy and fertilizer crisis of 1975-1976—although their use in that country dates back to 1951. Similarly in Thailand and Korea, biogas is being investigated as an alternative to costly charcoal and to save compost materials from being burned.
In Japan and China, reducing pollution from animal wastes has been an important factor. Privies, hen houses and pigpens are built in proximity to the fermentation chamber in China. Examinations of the digested slurry have shown that the total number of parasite eggs was reduced by 93.6 per cent, hookworms by 99 per cent and no schistosome flukes were found.
The greatest benefits from biogas systems, however, are probably to be derived from the manurial value of the slurry, although it is not widely used outside of India and China. Vegetable farmers near Calcutta found that the digested slurry produced bigger and better tasting peas than did other fertilizers and the weight of root vegetables increased by nearly 300 per cent.
Summary
The production of biogas by fermentation of animal and vegetable wastes is a technology that has been largely developed and used in the 71 countries. Only very recently have scientists in the industrialized nations begun to show an interest—presumably because of the “energy 72 ”.
Family-sized-biogas 73 first came into widespread use in India in the 1950s in an effort to make a cleaner and more efficient use of cattle dung. The programme really expanded in the 1970s, and today there are as many as 100,000 plants throughout the world. Most are in domestic use to provide fuel for plants, but some larger units are operated in order to recycle wastes, supply fertilizer, control pollution and improve 74 . One Chinese study has shown that digestion of animal 75 in the airtight digesters greatly reduces health hazards from parasitic diseases. One Indian study has estimated that the value of the fertilizer obtained is in itself greater than the cost of producing the biogas. Thus, the system is economically sound, in addition to other benefits such as a cleaner, healthier environment.
